Collection: Ritual Singapore

This collection is comprised of photographs from Marie's second book entitled Ritual Singapore, which was released in November of 2021.  These images were also the subject of a Selegie Arts Centre Exposition in conjunction with Volah! Festival 2021 organized by the French Embassy of Singapore from 25th-28th November. 

Due to the multicultural nature of the city-state, Singapore recognizes the celebrations of all major religions of Singapore as public holidays in accordance with legislation passed in 1966. Chinese New Year and Vesak Day are celebrated mainly by Singaporeans of Buddhist faith. The Hindus celebrate Deepavali, the festival of light. Christian holidays recognized are Good Friday and Christmas Day, and finally, recognized Muslim holidays are Hari Raya Aidil and Hari Raya Aidil Fitri. In addition, the following secular holidays are recognized: National Day, Labour Day and New Years Day. For each of these holidays, the city becomes beautifully decorated, and Singaporeans of different faiths learn to appreciate the traditions of their neighbours. Furthermore, many private celebrations and ceremonies take place in public space at the foot of HBDs, such as weddings, birthdays and funerals.
